Bondi Beach - History of the Popular Destination

Bondi Beach is as iconically Australian as BBQ and kangaroo. If you ask any tourist or traveller what's on their top ten list of things to see in Sydney, you can bet a trip to Bondi Beach will be on there. Bondi attracts all races and ages to its kilometre of white sand, its cafes, bars and clubs. If you love Bondi Beach too you may be interested in knowing more about its history...

Set against sandstone cliffs, the crescent shaped stretch of white sand and bubbling surf has played a huge role in the developmenyt of Australian beach culture. However, the beach has not always been so freely enjoyed as it is today. Initially, convicts were banned from bathing, and bathing was prohibited between 9.00 am and 8 pm until 1906, by which time sea bathing has become a popular activity and the beach had become associated with good health.

Bathing sheds were erected in 1903, and with a tramway constructed, Bondi became a popular weekend destination. By 1929, 60,000 people on average were being attracted to the beach, with 200,000 attending the opening of the Bondi Pavillion that same year.

An increase of popularity led to an increase in concern for bathers' welfare, and the first Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC ) was formed in Bondi in 1907. The club introduced the red and yellow caps now so distinctive and well known across all of Australia. The event of 1938's "Black Sunday", when lifesavers rescued over 300 bathers from the aftermath of three freak waves, cemented the role of Bondi's surf live savers in its culture.

Post-war, Bondi, along with the rest of the Eastern Suburbs, became home to many migrants, and in 1997 only 40% on the 10,000 Bondi residents were recorded as Australian. And perhaps this is what makes Bondi such a special place to live.
